Easter in Maramures is probably one of the most spectacular experiences that someone can have when visiting Romania.
Maramures is the northern part of Transylvania and the most traditional area of Romania. After a period of Lent, Easter Day is a day of celebration. In the morning, the whole village participates at the church service and, at the end of the mass, the baskets with food prepared by the ladies from the village, are blessed by the priest. All day long, people visit each other and celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord. The funniest tradition for children and adults is the eggs competition.
Another tradition on the second day of Easter takes place in the village of Surdesti, where the first villager who starts farming in the new year is celebrated by the whole community.
