Saxon Legacy in Transylvania - Private Guided Tour - 8 days
We promise you a journey back in time in the mysterious land of Transylvania. More than nine centuries ago, the first Saxons arrived in what today we call Transylvania and started the foundations of a true civilization that left a priceless treasure.
Day 1
We meet at your hotel and start the Transylvanian adventure. A good introduction will be a stop in Sinaia, where we will find out how Transylvania Province returned to Romania after the First World War. The ideal place to learn about this is Peles Castle, the summer residence of the Royal Family of Romania and one of the most beautiful palaces in Europe. After visiting Peles Castle, we cross the Carpathians and enter Transylvania. Our destination will be the Brasov Medieval City. We will take a walking tour in the old town of Brasov and you will learn how the first Saxon settlers founded old Kronstadt, today, Brasov.
OVERNIGHT IN BRASOV
Day 2
The next 4 days we will explore the charming countryside of Transylvania and we will stop in some beautiful Saxon villages.
Some of the first settlers in Transylvania were the Teutonic knights, who came to the area at the call of the Hungarian King, who ruled Transylvania. The place where you will learn about this will be Bran Castle, which, although it is known as Dracula's Castle, is much more than that.
After visiting Bran Castle, we reach the first Saxon Village, Viscri, the favorite place of King Charles of Great Britain. Once we arrive in Viscri Saxon Village, we take the accommodation at an old Saxon house, restored with the help of the Prince Charles Foundation. We will have enough time to walk around the village, meet the local craftsman, visit the Fortified Church and taste the delicious Transylvanian cuisine.
A charming moment is to see the cows coming back home in the evening - each cow knows which house to enter. In the evening, we enjoy a home cooked dinner prepared by a local lady (included in the price).
OVERNIGHT IN VISCRI SAXON VILLAGE
Day 3
The first stop of the day will be at the old fortress of Rupea, built more than 800 years ago. Transylvania had a network of fortresses to face the Turkish, Tatar or Mongol invasions. After visiting the Rupea Fortress, the next destination is the Saxon village of Mesendorf. Unlike Viscri, Mesendorf Village is just as charming, but much less known. We will stay at another beautifully restored Saxon house and visit a local cheese producer who uses traditional Saxon recipes to produce cheese. We will eat a delicious home cooked lunch and, in the afternoon, we are ready for a special experience: a horse cart ride to a sheep station, the perfect opportunity to see how the shepherds milk the sheep and produce cheese. In the evening we return to the village where another traditional dinner awaits us (included in the price).
OVERNIGHT IN MESENDORF SAXON VILLAGE
Day 4
We continue to explore land of the Saxon village and head to Richis Saxon Village, less known, but with an excellent location to explore the countryside of Transylvania. We will have a traditional accommodation in an old Saxon house with a wonderful garden.
Before arriving in Richis, we stop in the charming Sighisoara Medieval Citadel. This jewel of Transylvania is one of the last citadels with people still living inside the defense walls. A walk on the narrow streets will take us back in time hundreds of years, to medieval times. We stop for lunch at one of the excellent local restaurants in Sighisoara, and after lunch, we drive 45 minutes to our accommodation in Richis Saxon Village. We arrive at the accommodation, we rest, and in the afternoon we can take a relaxed hike on the nearby rolling hills to enjoy the charming views.
We will spend the evening in the garden and you will have the opportunity to do a wine tasting. The owners of the accommodation are local wine producers. The tasting would not be complete without a delicious home cooked dinner (included in the price).
OVERNIGHT IN RICHIS SAXON VILLAGE
Day 5
Today we explore the Saxon villages of Transylvania. We will visit fortified churches and peasant fortresses in Malancrav, Biertan and Valea Viilor Saxon Villages. You will have the opportunity to meet the locals and participate in craft workshops. In the afternoon, we return to Richis where another delicious home cooked dinner awaits us (included in the price).
OVERNIGHT IN RICHIS SAXON VILLAGE
Day 6
After four days in the wonderful land of the Saxon villages, we are heading to the most beautiful city in Romania: Sibiu. On the way, we take the opportunity to drive on the famous Transfagarasan Road, the most spectacular scenic road in Romania and one of the most beautiful in the world. The road brings us to the top of the Carpathians, at over 2000 meters above sea level, where you will enjoy fabulous landscapes! After having lunch at a mountain lodge, we drive to Sibiu Medieval City. In the afternoon, we explore Sibiu on a walking tour.
OVERNIGHT IN SIBIU
Day 7
It's time to say "goodbye" to Transylvania and return to Bucharest. After four hours driving, we arrive in the Romanian Capital. We take the accommodation and go for lunch.
