Discover with us the Fortified Churches from Transylvania!

Without a doubt, Transylvania's treasures are the Fortified Churches. These churches look more like fortresses and were built 8 centuries ago by the german colonists settled in Transylvania. In the 12th century, a germanic population came into what is today Transylvania and started a new life. This part of Europe was often attacked by invaders such as ottomans or tartars and this is why these churches were built with one, two or even three defensive walls around. This is the concept of a Fortified Church: a place where locals took refuge in case of an invasion.

German colonists came to Transylvania 900 years ago, but the vast majority left in the late 80s - early 90s. In the 80s, Romania was devastated by the communist regime led by former   dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. Life was miserable and almost everyone wanted to leave Romania. This is how almost 90% of the germanic population from Transylvania left Romania to Germany for a better life. It was a deal somehow between German State and communist authorities of Romania. The Saxons left for a better life and the communist took money for them.  They left behind an incredible heritage and today we can see how their life was.

Today, some of these churches are included in Unesco World Heritage.  Biertan, Valea Viilor, Prejmer, Viscri, Calnic, Saschiz and Sighisoara attracts visititors from all over the world. These Fortified Churches are located in very beautiful Saxon Villages from Transylvania where we have nice traditional accommodations in old Saxon houses. It is a great opportunity to experience how life was 100-200 years ago ! Another memorable experience is to have a traditional lunch or dinner at a local's house. We know the right ladies from these villages and they really know how to cook ! Delicious meals in beautiful settings!
