Roman Catholic Church in Sibiu

Roman Catholic Church in Sibiu

When the Hapsburg Empire overpowered Transylvania in 1681, the province was dominated by the supporters of the Reform – the Lutheran Saxons and the Calvin Magyars - or by the Romanian Orthodox Church (influenced by the Calvin). The Jesuits improvised a place of Catholic’s sermons for the Austrian soldiers imprisoned in Sibiu in the headquarters of the Tailor’s Community. The local authorities, of protestant confession, approved in the end, in 1726, the construction of the Roman Catholic Church from the Large Square raised in high baroque style until 1733. The mural painted in 1777 is impressive showing the Mother Superior's crowning in heaven.
