CISTERCIAN ABBACY FROM CÂRȚA

CISTERCIAN ABBACY FROM CÂRȚA

The establishment of CârÈ›a monastery dates from 1202. Seated at the bottom of Fagaras Mountains, it was a catholic Cistercian monastery, giving the name of the citadel. The assembly of the monastery is in a state of ruin, only a chapel being well preserved and used so far by the evangelic community of the Saxons. The monastery was built in two stages, before and after the fierce Turkish-Tatar invasion in 1241. In 1474, King Matei Corvin dismantled the abbacy. Here can be found the resting places of the Saxons from the area who fought in the First World War.
