Transfăgărăşan Road
When someone searches on google "best places to see in Romania", Transfagarasan Road is definitely among the first attractions. It is one of the most spectacular mountain roads in the world and crosses the Carpathians, connecting Transylvania with southern Romania.
Initially, the purpose of building this road was a military one. The former communist dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu was afraid of a Soviet invasion in Romania and wanted an alternative road to be used by the army. It was never used for this purpose, and now it is one of the most important tourist attractions of Romania.
Most of the road was built in less than 5 years by the Romanian military, and the last layer of asphalt was in place in 1980, 10 years after the start of the works. Many lives were lost for the construction of Transfagarasan Road, although the official data mentions only 40 lives lost.
Once you reach 2020 meters above sea level, the views over the Carpathians and the Balea glacial lake are truly spectacular. The famous TV show Top Gear designated Transfagarasan Road as "the most spectacular road in the world".
