Sighisoara Citadel

Sighisoara Citadel was built by the Saxon colonists who came to Transylvania nine centuries ago at the invitation of the King of Hungary.
Sighisoara Citadel

It was the Saxons who built much of Transylvania. In German language, Transylvania is called Sieben Burgen, which means "Seven Cities" because the Saxon colonists initially built seven settlements. Sighisoara also has a name in German language: Schasburg. The Citadel of Sighisoara was organized into different guilds. Each guild had its own tower where they carried out their activity and, in times of war, the towers of the guilds became defense towers. They were located on a defensive wall which, in part, is still preserved today. Sighisoara is also the birthplace of the famous Vlad the Impaler, ruler of Wallachia. Since 1999, Sighisoara Citadel is part of the Unesco World Heritage.
