Orthodox Cathedral from Sibiu

Orthodox Cathedral from Sibiu

The Orthodox Cathedral from Sibiu is built after Saint Sophia, the great cathedral of the patriarchs from Constantinople. On the inside, you will be amazed by the beauty of the iconostas painting and, in particular, of the dome - Jesus Pantocrator, the Angels and Virgin Mary and the four Evangelicals. It is the masterpiece of the painter Octavian Smigelschi, trendsetter for the modern church painting in Transylvania, a joint tradition of Byzantine, Western and Romanian decorations. Building of the cathedral did not last too long, during 1902-1904, but it was only the anniversary of the decades for the Orthodox priesthood endeavors carried amongst the authorities from Vienna. Hence, the first founders were the Metropolitan Bishop Andrei Saguna and the Emperor Francisco Josef I, by the contributions donated in 1858.
