Black Church from Brasov

The Black Church in Brasov is the symbol of the medieval city from Transylvania and one of the most important places to visit in Brasov.

The Black Church has dominated the city for more than six centuries. It got its name after a big fire in 1689 which burned a large part of the city and blackened the walls of the church. Initially, the church was Catholic, but after the reform initiated by Martin Luther, the Saxon community in Brasov became Protestant, and the Church became an Evangelical Church. The Black Church in Brasov is the largest Gothic church in Romania and is in use today for the Saxon community in the city.
