CORVINS’ CASTLE

Corvin Castle is the most impressive Gothic castle from Romania.
CORVINS’ CASTLE

It was built in the 1400s under the rule of Joan of Hunyad, governor of Transylvania. Joan of Hunyad also became the governor of Hungary and he is the father of Hungary's greatest king, Matia Corvin.  A legend of the castle says that three Turkish prisoners were given the task of digging a 30-meter deep well with the promise that they would be released at the end. The promise was no longer kept, and the three prisoners were killed. Their last wish was to write an inscription on the castle wall: "You have water, but no heart", as a reprimand for a promise made and not kept.

The name "Corvin" has a beautiful legend.
On the coat of arms of the Corvin family is drawn a raven holding a gold ring in its beak. It is said that Joan of Hunyad was the illegitimate son of Sigismund of Luxemburg, King of Hungary, with a beautiful woman, named Elisabeth. To protect her from dishonesty, the king marries one of his brave men, Voicu with Elisabeth,  giving him a ring as a gift for the unborn child, with the aim of being recognized when he grows up and goes to the royal court. During a trip made by Voicu's family, stopping for lunch, the ring is forgotten on a plate.  A raven, attracted by the brilliance of the ring, steals it trying to leave with it. The child Joan of Hunyad takes a bow and shoots the raven, thus recovering the ring. When he grows up and arrives at the royal court, he tells this story, and the king, impressed by this story, decides that the symbol of the Hunyad family should be the raven with a golden ring in its beak. Moreover, the family name comes from the Latin "Corvus", which means "Raven".
