At the end of a superb road that passes through Marginea village, famous for the special ceramics, Sucevita Monastery shows as a proud citadel, with walls, towers and strong contra-fort, guarded by high hills.

 

SuceviÈ›a is renowned for the "Ladder of Virtues", or the ladder of "Ioan Scararul". The paint covers the entire northern wall, most exposed to weather. The ladder the souls rise for the after death judgment is the border between the angels’ world, with well organized droves of angels, and the devil's errand, chaotic, with demons eager to wrest every soul agonizing to move up on the ladder.

 

Being the last painted monasteries in Bucovina (in 1595), the French art historian Paul Henry, who investigated the old churches in Bukovina 100 years ago, called Sucevița "The Will of the Moldavian Medieval Art."
