PUTNA MONASTERY - THE JERUSALEM OF THE ROMANIAN NATION

PUTNA MONASTERY - THE JERUSALEM OF THE ROMANIAN NATION

Called by the national poet, Mihai Eminescu, "The Jerusalem of the Romanian Nation", Putna monastery is the first and the most important edifice built by Stephen the Great, who is also buried here. The legend says that the famous confessor Daniil Sihastru counseled Stephen the Great in choosing the site for the establishment of this stronghold monastery.

Sanctified in 1470, Putna monastery passed throughout centuries - Tartars and Ottomans’ invasions, the taking of Bukovina by the Austrians, earthquakes or fires, which could not cut off the monastery life.

The "Old Putna Church” is near the monastery, a wooden church built by the first dismounted, Dragoș Vodă, who had come from Maramureș region to Moldavia, in a village called Volovăț. Then, the church was moved by Stephen the Great to Putna. Built in 1350, this is the oldest wooden church in Europe.
