NEAMȚ MONASTERY

Neamț Monastery is the oldest Moldavian monastery, leading a monastery life since the 14th century. The first stone church was built here in 1375.

Neamț is one of the most famous Orthodox monasteries in the world. Its reputation was brought in the 18th century by Saint Paisie Velicicovski, a monk under whose rule the monastery got to have more than a thousand monks and formed numerous other monasteries in Moldavia.

NeamÈ› Monastery accommodates a particularly valuable icon, painted in 665 on both sides, showing Virgin Mary and Saint George. The icon is named "Lidianca" after the name of Saint George’s city, Lydda, where this image appeared miraculously on a church’s pillar. The icon was ordered by Saint Gherman and, centuries later, in 1429, it was given as a gift to the Moldavian emperor, Alexandru cel Bun, by one of the last Byzantine emperors, Ioan VIII Paleologul.

Two other monks’ monasteries, Secu and Sihăstria, known for the confessing life, are located high top of Neamț Monastery.
