Neamț Citadel won its fame in 1476, under Stephen the Great, when it stood against a dreadful Ottoman siege. Mahomet II, the conqueror of Constantinople himself, as the head of a overwhelming army of 200,000 Ottoman Turks had to raise the siege in front of the tenacious defense of the citadel. Recently restored, Neamț Citadel provides an incursion into the medieval times.
