WOODEN CHURCH FROM SURDESTI – UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE

With a 54 m high turret and a total height of 72 meters, the Greek-Catholic church of Șurdești was until recently the tallest wooden construction in the world. The awe inspiring height of the Maramureş churches is owed to the faith of locals who believe that the taller the church, the faster God receives their prayers. The old Greek-Catholic Church from Surdești was raised of oak studs on a stone foundation, between the years 1721-1724, by the local craftsman Ion Macarie.
