SIGHET MEMORIAL

SIGHET MEMORIAL

The former communist prison from Sighet was transformed into the Memorial Museum of the Communism and Resistance Victims. Great figures of the Romanian inter-war period were secluded - dignitaries, politicians, military officers, brand intellectuals (22 academicians), as well as 50 Greek-Catholic, Romano-Catholic and Orthodox priests. The regime was one of extermination; here died the Romania Unification artisan - Iuliu Maniu, the great historian and academician Gheorghe Brătianu or the courageous young Greek-Catholic bishop Ioan Suciu. Those who were very weak were taken out of their cells and isolated in a different cell where they were left to die. They were buried without a cross and without a name in the Poor’s Cemetery from Sighet, which has now the shape of Romania contoured from a fence of green conifers.
