The University Square is called by the Romanians “The Zero Kilometer of Democracy”. Large protest manifestations took place here in December 1989 against Ceausescu’s, resulting in a bloodbath. Then, in the spring on 1990, a marathon manifestation took place in the University Square against the neo-communist authorities that had taken over the power. This was also put out in violence, by calling thousands of determined miners against the students and the intellectuals who were refusing a “communism with a human face”.

Important buildings from Bucharest can be found in the University Square: the University founded in 1864, the National Theatre, inaugurated in 1852, as well as the Intercontinental Hotel, a 5 stars hotel, built in 1970.
