In 1999, this Romano-catholic Cathedral hosted the historical service of Pope John Paul the Second, the first service held by a Pope in a predominant orthodox counrty. „Romania is the Virgin Mary’s Garden”, said Pope John Paul the Second during his visit in 1999. The Romano-catholic Cathedral Saint Joseph from Bucharest was built between the years 1873 – 1884 and it boasts about a Romanic style architecture with gothic elements, endowed by architect Friedrich Schmidt from Vienna.
