ROMANIAN ATHENAEUM
ROMANIAN ATHENAEUM is one of the most representatives buildings in Bucharest. "Give one Leu for the Athenaeum" is an expression very well known by the Romanians. They were asked by the authorities to donate one Leu each for the construction of the building. The building was inaugurated in 1888 and it surprises on a first sight by a colonnade that reminds of the Hellenic Vestiges. The five medallions built in the mosaic represent the names of the five greatest Romanian rulers: Neagoe Basarab, Alexandru cel Bun, King Carol I of Romania, Vasile Lupu and Matei Basarab.
