Romania`s communist past - Private Tour - 7 days

ROUTE: Bucharest - Scornicesti - Sibiu - Sighet - Sighisoara - Targoviste - Bucharest

DISTANCE: 1,400 kilometers

DURATION: 7 days

AVAILABILITY: all year round

DAY 1 - The communist BUCHAREST

This private tour will carry us through places where the Romanian nation suffered because of the communist regime installed by the Soviets after the Second World War. We pass through Romanian martyr cities; we will make introspection in the communist prisons where thousands of people died in terrible agony. We will visit Nicolae Ceausescu’s birth place and the military unit where the former dictator and his wife were executed.

On the first day, we meet at the airport, and we will take you to the hotel. Depending on your arrival time, we will begin exploring Bucharest. We will visit Palace of the Parliament; a megalomaniac building designed by Ceausescu. Initially it was called the People's House although the only connection with the nation was that the Romanians were those who built it with the price of many lives, but they never enjoyed it. People's House was intended for the Romanian communist state. We will reach the places of the Romanian Revolution from 1989: Revolution Square and University Square. You will see the balcony where Ceausescu held his last speech and the building where he flew away from, by helicopter, chased by a group of revolutionaries. The fearful Jilava prison is near Bucharest, a place where dozens of communist regime opponents were killed. OVERNIGHT IN BUCHAREST

DAY 2 BUCHAREST - SCORNICESTI - SIBIU

The next day – we are leaving for Scornicesti, Ceausescu’s home town. In the morning we will walk over to Doftana Valley, where Doftana prison is located, Nicolae Ceausescu’s place of detention in the 30’s. Once the communism fell in Romania, this prison entered into a process of degradation. We will visit the outside of this prison. Our way continues to Scornicesti, the village where the former dictator of Romania was born. We’ll visit the house where Ceausescu spent his childhood. The place is kept as built at the end of the 1800s. The furniture is the same from the former communist Romanian leader’s childhood time. From Scornicesti, we are heading to Transylvania and we reach the beautiful Sibiu city, where we will accommodate. Here we will visit the historical center. OVERNIGHT IN SIBIU

DAY 3 Sibiu - Cluj Napoca

In the morning, we will leave for Aiud, a dreadful prison where many anti-communist Romanians lost their lives. In the afternoon we will reach the Transylvanian city Cluj-Napoca where we will accommodate. OVERNIGHT IN CLUJ NAPOCA.

Day 4 - Cluj Napoca - SIGHET

The road will take us from Transylvania to Maramures, another area of the country that did not escape the communist oppression. Another center of communist torture was in Sighet. Now, Sighet prison is dismantled and converted into a memorial dedicated to the martyrs who lost their lives within its walls. Since we are in this superb Romanian area we will visit two of Maramures wooden churches, included in the UNESCO World Heritage, Budesti and Desesti. OVERNIGHT IN MARAMURES

DAY 5 SIGHET - SIGHISOARA

On this day we go back to Transylvania, on a different route. At noon we reach Sighisoara, also called "the Pearl of Transylvania", whose medieval citadel is included in the UNESCO world heritage. OVERNIGHT IN SIGHISOARA

DAY 6 Sighisoara - BUCHAREST

On this day, we return to Bucharest, not before visiting the place where Nicolae Ceausescu’s life and regime ended. We are going to arrive to Targoviste, in a military unit, the place where Ceausescu couple, Nicolae and Elena was executed. In December 1989, the two of them were caught and brought to Targoviste under military escort. A military court was improvised and charged them of genocide against the Romanian people. After a summary trial, the rule was final: they were sentenced to death. They were executed in this military unit we will visit. It still preserves the wall where the two lost their lives. In the afternoon return to Bucharest. A NIGHT OF ACCOMMODATION IN BUCHAREST

DAY 7 BUCHAREST

After breakfast, we will make a last visit to Ghencea cemetery, the place where Ceausescu couple is buried. It's the place where year-over-year, on January 26th, on the commemorative birthday of the former communist dictator, the elegiacs of the regime meet to reel memories of the "Golden Age". After this tour where you saw what the communism meant for Romania, we will take you to the airport for your departure.
